On 8th Monday, January 2017. A Nigeria Air Force MI17 helicopter crashed along Bama and Gwoza route axis.
The Air Force Director of Public Relations and Information, AVM Olatokunbo Adesanya confirmed the attack in a statement in a public press release.
He said; “A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Mi17 Helicopter has suffered a mishap while undertaking a mission in the ongoing counterinsurgency operation in the North East. The incident, which occurred today, 8 January 2018, resulted in significant damage to the helicopter. There was, however, no loss of lives as a result of the incident”.
The Chief of the Airforce Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has immediately directed the constitution of a board of inquiry to determine the exact cause of the incident, in line with global best practices.
Rumours has it that the crashed NAF MI17 helicopter was attacked by Boko Haram sects during an operation, conveying personnel on medical outreach programme at Gwoza” when it was attacked by the insurgents.
Some say it might be a technical or mechanical fault, leading the helicopter to crash loosing its entire tail of the aircraft body.
